The Lost Church of Saint-Jacques-la-Boucherie

A Starting Point for Pilgrims Before it was a lonely tower, this was a massive and wealthy church. It served as the main meeting point for pilgrims setting out on the Santiago de Compostela trail (the Via Turonensis). Its name, "la Boucherie," comes from the powerful guild of butchers who lived and worked in this district and funded the church's splendor.

A Gothic Masterpiece

(1509-1522) The tower you see today was the church's bell tower. Built in the Flamboyant Gothic style during the reign of François I, it represents the peak of medieval architectural art in Paris. Every gargoyle and statue was designed to show the wealth of the parish.

The Miracle of the Revolution During the French Revolution, the church was declared "National Property" and sold to a private buyer in 1797. The church itself was demolished, stone by stone, to be sold as building material.

Why did the tower survive? The buyer realized that if he blew up the tower, it would crush all the surrounding houses. It was spared and later became a factory for lead shot!

🔬 Science & Culture: The Legend of Blaise Pascal

At the base of the tower, you will find a statue of the famous French scientist and philosopher, Blaise Pascal. In 1648, he performed crucial experiments on atmospheric pressure here. He chose this Gothic tower because its height was perfect for his measurements! This adds a unique scientific layer to the tower’s long architectural history.
